Britain's Coast

Basically Britain is just a collection of islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, so it's no surprise the coast will figure prominently.

From the brash tackiness of the likes of Blackpool and Brighton, the naval ports of Portsmouth and Plymouth. From craggy cliffs to wide tidal expanses, the coastline has something for everyone, as long as you are not hydrophobic.

The biggest dilemma was where to begin. Do I start at the top at John O'Groats, or the bottom at Land's End? How about London, our capital city. The choice is quite arbitrary.

In the end I decided to use Portsmouth as a starting port. Logically a good starting point, as befits a maritime nation, being the home of the Royal Navy. However it is also an emotional choice as I was bought up in the Portsmouth area and although I now probably live as far away from the sea as is possible in the UK, I still consider Portsmouth to be "home".
