South Africa - KwaZulu - Natal

Prices quoted are correct as of June 2026

KwaZulu- Natal province was created in 1994 with the merger of the provinces of KwaZulu and Natal. Geographically it is diverse with the Drakensberg Mountains to the west, the Indian Ocean coast to the east and verdant plains in between and it has an area almost the same size as Portugal.

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game reserve is the oldest game reserve in Africa, much smaller than Kruger I think it a better safari experience. Home to the “big five” plus many other species, it’s main focus is conservation, especially in terms of the white rhino and the reserve is home to the largest population of white rhino in the world.

The park has a 300 km (190 mile) road network and has more contrasting scenery that Kruger. A range of escorted safari’s are available with a nine hour escorted tour available for 850 rand (£42.50) per person including breakfast, barbecue and refreshments. 750 rand (£37.50) will get you a 6 hour safari, including breakfast and water, whilst a three hour trip will cost you 545 rand (£27.50).

Lake St Lucia is one of the largest estuary lakes in Africa and is home to 800 Hippo’s and around 1,000 Nile crocodiles and more species of birds than you can imagine. Numerous companies provide boat trips on the lake, usually lasting around two hours and you have the opportunity to get really close to the hippopotami and crocodiles. Expect to pay around 200 rand (£10) for the trip.

Durban is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and it’s a city of contrasts. The Golden Mile is the main coastal resort with a golden beach facing the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Well maintained and very popular in the day with plenty of attractions the area is not so good at night, especially the roads leading off the Golden Mile where prostitution and drug dealing seems rife.

Other attractions include the Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a Skycar ride to the top offers fantastic 360° panoramic views of the city. Close to the Stadium is the Suncoast Casino.

The Durban Botanic Gardens is one of the best free shows in town, beautiful gardens set around a lake the gardens are very popular for wedding photographs.

Downtown is like any other city although those who know Belfast well may do a double take as the City Hall is a replica of the City Hall in Belfast.

The Indian Market is well worth a visit.
